After completing her education, she married Ramesh Yadav, RJD Legislator. He was a crucial part of the Rashtriya Janata Dal party that had its influence in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Kerala. However, he passed away in 1998, leading his wife, Annapurna enter the party in his place.

Annapurna Devi started her political journey in 1998. At the start of her journey, she had some face value in her district Koderma because of her husband’s political presence. She stood in elections for the first time in 2000 for Koderma Assembly polls. Bihar and Jharkhand were one at that time. She won the elections every time getting support from the RJD party and the Koderma people.

Thus, she used to win the Koderma Lok Sabha seat every time she contested till 2009. After four consecutive wins, she gets a minister role in Jharkhand in the RJD party. In the coming year of 2014, she also got the role of Jharkhand RJD chief. She worked for different causes including child rescue. Her major focus was on reuniting these rescued kids with their parents. Annapurna has always been close to the children.

She has actively contributed to the skill development of the state. 2019 was a turning point in her life. She decided to join the BJP and directly stood for Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate. It was her biggest win against Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha with 4.55 Lakh votes in her name. She became the Union Minister of State for Education in 2021 under the Modi government.
